Troy and Melanie (dot com) bio picture

Welcome to our life!

We are a growing family located in Austin, TX.  Not too long ago it was just the two of us.  Then we added our fur-baby, Bella.  And most recently we added our son, Cole.  This blog was created to keep our friends and families updated on the goings on at the Schneider household.  Given the new arrival, many of the posts will be geared towards our struggle to learn how to be good parents.

We enjoy watching movies, traveling, photography, reading, and hanging out with friends (preferably while doing anything in this list).  You are bound to read some funny stories here as we try to keep it light hearted and you'll definitely see a pile of photos.

So if you like a post, want to share your opinion, or just want to say hi feel free to leave us a comment.  We *love* comments.

Learning New Things

The process of raising a child is full of learning, both for the child and his parents. This week we’ve really started to be consistent with feeding Cole a bowl of solid food and he’s learning to like it (we tried oatmeal tonight for the first time and he really seemed to like it). The real story this week was that we started to teach Cole to fall asleep on his own in his crib… a process that hasn’t gone terribly smoothly, but with some success. We’ve learned that we have a pretty strong willed son. He’s fallen asleep around 9pm each of the past 2 nights and slept longer each night (6 hours last night), but after his overnight feeding he’s refused to go back to sleep. He’s also fought our attempts to put him down for a nap in his crib all weekend… you can imagine how unpleasant he’s been. We’re going to stick with it and hope that he stops fighting it and learns to just go with it and fall asleep when he’s tired. Wish us luck.

So much going on

Sometime it feels like there is just too much going on to really focus on anything. Case in point, Melanie and I would love to begin the process of teaching Cole to fall asleep on his own (meaning no nursing to sleep, no holding, no rocking, no swinging, no riding, etc.), but the weekends sneak up on us so quickly we’re not prepared. So this weekend has come and gone and he’s no closer to being able to fall asleep on his own… poo. The good news is that we gave him some rice cereal with just water (instead of breast milk or formula) and he seemed to like that better so there’s hope for him learning to eat solids. He’s also getting really chatty. Check out this audio clip:

Yesterday we celebrated AJ’s birthday with her friends and family and we had a really good time. Cole did really well and was his normal, charming, smiley self. He fell asleep almost as soon as we got in the car :)

(please forgive me if this post seems a bit disjointed… I’m trying to type up some thoughts quickly so I can finish up a video project for work, VPN into work to do a bit of paperwork, shave, and buzz my head all before going to bed)

Look for a movie of Cole rolling over tomorrow (he’s getting really good at it)

Everyone is feeling better

Apparently the call for good vibes worked because we’re all feeling pretty good. Cole hasn’t enjoyed the taste of the antibiotics, but they are working because he’s back to his smiley self and is almost back to his normal sleeping schedule. Thanks for everyone who sent good thoughts our way.

Here are a few photos… not new, just processed to look like Polaroids (I love Polaroids)

Send good thoughts

We are definitely not a pessimistic couple when it comes to illness. We all get sick from time-to-time and we heal and move on. Last week Cole, Melanie, and I all had a stomach bug (you can read all about it in the previous post). Yesterday I ended up staying home from work because I woke up with a fever and felt crappy all day. Well none of that compares to the onslaught of virus and bacteria buggies that have invaded poor Cole. Melanie took him to the doctor today because he’s been a snotty mess for a couple of days and we found out that he has RSV, bronchiolitis, and an ear infection. Talk about a whammy. Poor guy. He’s on Amoxicillin for the ear infection and we’re okay to give him Tylenol to help with the aches and occasional fever. They seem to be giving him some relief as I got a few smiles from him when I got home from work today. We are incredibly optimistic that he’s going to get better soon and go back to his smiley, happy self, but it never hurts to have a few more good vibes flowing in.

Thanks y’all!

What a week

This past week was a mess. We got a call from school on Wednesday that Cole had vomited a few times and they needed us to pick him up. So we both left work early… I swung by the school and picked up Cole and Melanie headed home so she would be there to take care of him once we got there. Other than vomiting he was in happy spirits… odd… no fever. By 2pm the next day his vomiting had cleared up… all was looking good… and then Friday morning hit. 3am Mel is up vomiting… by 6am I’m in the other bathroom doing the same… by 3pm we threw in the towel and had to call in help (THANK YOU JEN AND STEPH!). The good news is that we have great friends and they were able to take Cole overnight and deliver us some much needed supplies. We’re feeling better now, but that was a week and weekend that I don’t want to repeat. And now I’m going to leave you with some photos while I go firefight a problem at work.
