Troy and Melanie (dot com) bio picture

Welcome to our life!

We are a growing family located in Austin, TX.  Not too long ago it was just the two of us.  Then we added our fur-baby, Bella.  And most recently we added our son, Cole.  This blog was created to keep our friends and families updated on the goings on at the Schneider household.  Given the new arrival, many of the posts will be geared towards our struggle to learn how to be good parents.

We enjoy watching movies, traveling, photography, reading, and hanging out with friends (preferably while doing anything in this list).  You are bound to read some funny stories here as we try to keep it light hearted and you'll definitely see a pile of photos.

So if you like a post, want to share your opinion, or just want to say hi feel free to leave us a comment.  We *love* comments.

Cole is moving up

Yesterday we celebrated Cole’s last day in his current room at school. On Monday he’ll be starting in a new room with a group of new kids (luckily for him he already has interacted with most of them… 3 from his current room, 3 from a previous room, and 2 from Gymboree). We celebrated with cookies, “diplomas”, toy buckets, and lots of laughs. We’re all going to miss his teachers, but we’re looking forward to seeing what this next year will bring (potty training among other things).

Here are some photos (taken with our iPhones) from the party.

For some reason he loved the taste of his diploma

Who Dat?

This past week was a pretty eventful week (and I’m going to include today in that week)…

  • Upped Cole’s bottles to 5 ounces
  • I supported a 14 hour software release for work on Saturday
  • The Colts and Saints won their respective conference championship games to earn a spot in the Superbowl (for the Saints this will be their first ever appearance in the Superbowl… the subject line of this post is a shout out to them)
  • We bought a Blu-ray player and upgraded our home theatre system (more toys for me)
  • We had dinner with Steph, Dave, AJ, and Katie at Rudy’s tonight (always good to hang out with friends)

This coming week is going to be eventful too. My birthday is on Thursday the 28th (33 years old). Melanie and I are going to celebrate with a dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in downtown (pricey, but sooo good). We’re upping Cole’s bottles to 6 ounces and planning on introducing solids to his diet in the next couple of weeks. Cole’s teachers told us that he’s starting to roll over from back to front which is a good sign of the progress he’s making on muscle control. He’s definitely getting stronger… constantly wanting to sit up when we put him on his back (check out the photo below of him trying to sit up in his bathtub).

Adventures in child care: week 2

Forgive me, friends and family, for slacking in my blogging and photo posting duties. This past week was quite busy and I found it near impossible to get some time at the computer let alone get some photos posted. The good news is that tomorrow is a holiday so I have the day off… which means you get some of my time tonight writing up a blog post and posting some Cole goodness. You’ll get photos, a video, and two audio clips below. Joy!

Melanie and I have fallen into a good rhythm with school. We wake up around 6:30, Mel feeds Cole while I get dressed and grab some food, we dress Cole, and I take him to school around 7:30. Mel tries to finish up work around 4 so she can pick Cole up between 4 and 5. It’s been working pretty well. Weekends are another story. When we don’t have to get up for work it’s hard for us to get up at all so Cole gets to wake up, get fed, and then sleep with us in our bed. Please don’t yell at us about co-sleeping and safety and all that… we know… we read… a lot.

So this week was going smoothly for Cole until Thursday when we got a call from his teacher that he had a fever and we needed to pick him up. Of course both Melanie and I, being the stellar first time parents we are, rushed over to pick him up and take him to the doctors. The school had indicated that he wasn’t acting like himself and that he had an under-the-arm temperature of 99.3 (adjusted up a degree for an oral temperature). Well he was certainly acting like himself when we picked him up and he was a happy little cherub at the doctor’s office and had no fever (odd). We kept an eye on him overnight and took his temperature a few times, but he was fine and went back to school on Friday (with a note from the doctor). Both Melanie and I believe it was an escape plan and he knew what he was doing all along.

Is that face not the best face ever? Mommy was “attacking” him with a pillow.

Happy Saturday!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day here in Austin… sunny and 75… and we had an excellent day. Cole was all smiles and he (as well as B girl) enjoyed the walk we took this evening. It’s nearing kick off time of the Texas/Missouri football game so I have to get downstairs soon, but I wanted to post a couple of photos to keep y’all coming back :)

The last two weeks

These last two weeks have flown by. Cole’s umbilical cord stump fell off on the 9th… we gave him his first real bath on the 14th (Cole absolutely hated it)… he’s peed on all of us… we gave him his first bottle on the 15th (it’s nice that Grandma B and I can help Mel with feeding now)… we’ve established a rhythm for the overnight hours so we don’t feel like zombies during the day… we’ve taken him out for his first walk… and we’ve been enjoying all of the little things that Cole does to make us smile, laugh, awww, and grit our teeth in frustration. Enjoy some photos (videos will be posted later when they are finished uploading to YouTube).

Likes and Dislikes

Slowly, but surely we are adjusting to this parenting thing. Today Cole is 1 week old… I really hope that the rest of his life doesn’t go by as quickly as this first week did. Sure we had our cranky nights, frustrating diaper changes, worrisome “is he ever going to stop crying?” time, and plenty of awwww moments, but it’s something that we’re getting used to and soon we’ll be pros. One of the things that we’ve begun to take notice of are the things that he likes and dislikes. Here’s what we noticed so far:

Likes…

  • Crying (he does it enough that it seems he likes it)
  • Being outside
  • Warmth
  • Nursing
  • Snuggling
  • Comfort suckling

Dislikes…

  • Sponge baths
  • Getting his diaper changed
  • Hiccups
  • Messing with his feet (too many blood draws in the hospital)
  • Sleeping alone in his bassinet or crib

Here’s a photo of he and I doing one of his favorite things. I gotta say I love these moments.

Speaking of likes and dislikes, what do you think about the new blog layout? There’s a poll at the bottom of the page or you can just leave a comment and give me your opinion.

Baby C is Home

Yeah… it’s 4:30am and I’m awake… I get the late night shift for a couple of days. I’m not complaining… he’s fun to be around (when he’s not screaming and I can usually calm him down so I don’t spend too much time dealing with him yelling at me :) ). Here’s a little video that Melanie shot today shortly after we arrived home (I love the little bear feet!).
